The hammam is the best thing your skin can do in Morocco, and it is also the part some travellers talk themselves out of. The public ones are an experience, steam, strangers, a stranger scrubbing you raw, and not everyone is up for that on the first trip. The hotel spa versions can feel watered down and cost a fortune. There is a third way. You do the whole ritual in your own bathroom, with one artist and no audience.
She brings the black soap, the kessa glove and the argan, and she runs the steps the way they are meant to go. You do not leave your riad, you do not queue, and you come out of your own shower scrubbed soft and smelling of argan. When it is done you pay, and you can fall straight into bed or a robe and mint tea.
The ritual, step by step
A hammam is a sequence, and the order is what makes it work. The artist takes you through each stage at a calm pace in the warmth of your bathroom.
- Black soap (savon beldi) smoothed on and left to soften the skin in the steam
- A firm scrub with the kessa glove that lifts away weeks of dead skin
- A rinse, then a clay or argan based mask if you want one
- Argan oil to finish, so your skin feels fed rather than stripped
Your bathroom becomes the hammam
You do not need a marble steam room. A normal hot shower throws off enough steam to open the pores, and the artist works with what your riad or hotel bathroom has. Run the shower hot for a few minutes before she starts and the room does the rest. It stays completely private, just you and the artist, which is the part most people quietly prefer over the public hammams in the medina.
Real Moroccan products
Black soap is a soft olive paste, almost like tar to look at, and it is what makes the kessa scrub work. The argan comes from the trees west of Marrakech and it is the good stuff, not a scented imitation. If your skin is sensitive, tell the artist and she scrubs lighter. First time having a kessa scrub? Expect to be surprised by how much skin comes off. That is normal, and it is the point.
