At-Home Makeup or a Salon? An Honest Marrakech Guide

The GLAMCREW teamJune 27, 20264 min read

You have one evening that matters: a rooftop dinner, a friend's wedding, a night out that you have been looking forward to since you booked the flights. You want to look like yourself on a very good day. Two ways to get there: go to a salon, or have a makeup artist come to you.

Both can be great, and the right answer depends on your trip more than on any rule. GLAMCREW does the at-home version, so take my comparison with that in mind, but I will be straight about when a salon is the better shout. Here is how the two really stack up when you are a visitor in Marrakech.

Time, and the morning you actually have

A salon visit is never just the appointment. It is the time to get there, the wait if they are running behind, the appointment itself, and the trip back. In a city you are still learning, each of those takes longer than it would at home. At-home makeup is only the appointment. You are dressed and ready in your own room, and the hour you saved on travel is yours.

On a packed trip, that hour is not small. It can be the difference between a relaxed evening and arriving flushed and rushed.

Taxis and finding a place you do not know

Marrakech is not an easy city to navigate on a deadline. The Medina is a knot of derbs that GPS reads badly, petit taxis sometimes haggle over the fare, and an address that looks close on a map can mean a ten-minute walk through alleys you have never seen. None of that is a problem at 11am with time to spare. Before a dinner reservation, it is stress you do not need.

When the artist comes to you, the navigation is their job, not yours. You share your location once at booking and stay put.

Privacy and comfort

Getting ready in your own space is simply nicer. Your clothes are right there, your music is on, and you are not perched in a busy salon trying to relax on cue. If you are shy about the process, or you just want quiet before a big night, that privacy is worth a lot.

It also makes the dressing order easy. You can do hair and makeup, then step into your outfit in the same room, without protecting a fresh look on a taxi ride.

Language and getting the look you want

Explaining the exact look you want is harder across a language gap, and a rushed salon is not the place to discover that. A GLAMCREW artist works comfortably in English and French, so you can talk through what you are after, show a photo, and ask for softer or bolder without it getting lost in translation.

That back-and-forth is most of the result. When you can describe what you want and be understood, you walk away happier.

When a salon still wins

I said I would be honest, so here it is. If you want the outing itself to be part of the fun, say a group of you making an afternoon of it, a salon has an atmosphere that home cannot copy. If you want a treatment that needs salon equipment, or a traditional hammam followed by makeup in the same place, go to the salon. And if you like to browse colours and products in person, that is easier in a shop.

For one important evening on a short trip, though, at-home usually wins on time and comfort. GLAMCREW evening makeup starts at 550 MAD and you pay after, so it is easy to try without committing anything up front.

Frequently asked questions

Is at-home makeup more expensive than a salon in Marrakech?
Not necessarily. GLAMCREW evening makeup starts at 550 MAD and you pay after the service. The clear saving is two taxi rides and the waiting, plus you get ready in your own room.
How will the artist find my riad in the Medina?
You share your location when you book, and the artist handles the derbs and the directions. You do not have to meet anyone at a landmark or guide them in.
Can the artist copy a look from a photo I have?
Yes. Bring reference photos and say what you do and do not like. Working in English or French, the artist can match the look or adjust it to suit your features.
